Eugene S. Smotkin

Eugene Smotkin obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989.  Dr. Smotkin, along with Ralph O’Neil and Andrea Yuen, co-founded NuVant Systems in 1999.  Smotkin is Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University in Boston. He has 20 years experience in fuel cell R&D; awarded over $14 million in government and industry grants, has over 100 peer-reviewed articles and 14 patents.  He was admitted as a Fellow of the Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana in 2013. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Electrochemical Society and is the Faculty adviser to the Boston Electrochemical Society Student Chapter.

Robert Anderson

Director of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property, Illinois Institute of Technology came to IIT after 38 years of experience at UOP LLC, a technology and licensing company for oil refineries and petrochemical companies. At UOP, he worked in a number of positions related to business and engineering, a combination fostered by his degree earned at IIT and his master’s degree in management earned from Northwestern University in 1984. His responsibilities at UOP included leadership positions in R&D, manufacturing, licensing, and general management. He most recently served as Vice President of Marketing, a position that he held from 1996 through 2000. Mr. Anderson has had a long relationship with Illinois Institute of Technology. Since graduating from IIT in 1962 with a B.S. in chemical engineering, he has been a generous donor of both time and of funds to IIT. For the last eight years, he has been active on the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board and currently serves as its Chair. He is a member of IIT’s President’s Council and has been awarded both the IIT Distinguished Alumnus Award (1997) and the Alumni Award of Merit (1999). Mr. Anderson has been on the NuVant board of directors since 2002.

Thomas E. Mallouk

Thomas Mallouk is Evan Pugh Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Physics and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and also serves as Associate Director of The Center for Nanoscale Science at Penn State. Dr. Mallouk is a pioneer in the high throughput discovery and testing of electrocatalysts, developing methods for rapidly identifying and synthesizing new catalysts.  He has contributed to the development of catalysts and membranes for fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, electrolyzers, and water splitting solar cells.  Dr. Mallouk earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983.  He received the ACS Award in the Chemistry of Materials in 2008, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2015.  He has been Chief Scientist at NuVant Systems since 1999 and a member of the Board of Directors since 2002.

Mark V. Hurwitz, Ph.D., J.D.

Obtained his Ph.D. in Astronomy from U.C. Berkeley in 1990. He was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1997 and is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union. He is Associate Research Astronomer and Senior Space Fellow at UC Berkeley. Dr. Hurwitz obtained is J.D. from U.C Berkeley in 2000. He has a Certificate in Law and Technology and is a member of the California Law Review and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. He is a member of the American Bar Association. From 2000 – 2004 Marks was a Litigation Associate with Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe LLP. Mark was elected to the board as the preferred stock holder’s representative.

Linda Smotkin

Linda obtained a B.S. in Communications from University of Texas at Austin in 1983. She served as the marketing director for Hispanic Publishing Corporation from 1994 to 1999. She then became corporate relations manager for Help One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) Corporation from 1999-2001. Currently Linda has been the Corporate Secretary at NuVant Systems for 14 years.
